The More Things Change…
Above is a picture from Christmas, 1990. That was the year I got the NES Max, my second favorite console controller of all time, right behind the Wavebird. I was wearing my favorite pajamas: TMNT. Specifically, Raphael, my favorite turtle. Below is a photo I took with my iPhone, 5 minutes ago.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I picked these up at Target yesterday. They actually had footie pajamas crafted to look like the turtles as well (for adults), but I just couldn’t go that far. I suppose I’ve grown a bit conservative in my 30s.
My 2 year old, Amelia, thinks they’re awesome. “‘Urtles!” she proclaimed when she saw me in the morning. I asked her which was her favorite: “Loo! Leenaado!” She likes Leonardo the best. While my inner child wanted to say, “Seriously? The goody-two-shoes?” I couldn’t do it. I support her love of Turtles. They were important to me growing up, a child of the consumerist ’90s. These things defined who we were, and who we are. Now to get the l’il miss some TMNT PJs.
I’ll be interested to see how the next generation comes along…
